Yurko Studio of Architecture is a full-service firm in Asheville, NC, led by John Yurko AIA. We strive to create architecture that is simple, beautiful, and economical of both form and function. We believe that architecture should be integral with its setting, honest in its structure, and permissive of the experience the light and nature for the occupants. We also believe in the control of construction costs, and the leverage of our knowledge and understanding of materials and methods to achieve this goal. Our daily pursuit is a timeless execution of architecture that is fulfilling to its users, and that blends thoughtful design with a mastery of form.
John Yurko
John Yurko AIA has been a practicing architect since 1986 upon graduation from the University of Kentucky College of Architecture. After working for various large and small firms, and with a particular interest in regional architecture, he founded the firm in Asheville, NC in 1993. The firm is a diverse practice, providing services that include master planning, needs assessments, architecture, interiors, project phasing, acoustics, adaptive reuse, furniture design, 3D visualization, and other specialized design such as its clients require. The firm is active in such projects as master planning, single & multi-family, resort facilities, historic restoration, urban development, and school projects.
The firm’s work is based on its belief in architecture as a social art that is generated from an integration of site specifics, client needs, design skill, and a command of building technology. Its work includes consideration of not only how the client will use the building but also how it will perform over time.
John is a longstanding member of the American Institute of Architects, having in the past served as president of AIA-Asheville and as a Board member of AIA-NC. He is also a member if the Interfaith Forum on Religion, Arts, and Architecture, an association of professionals whose primary interest is religious facilities in a broad array of traditions. He is active in local and regional land-planning and water-quality efforts, and is a member of the United States Green Building Council. He is NCARB Board certified, licensed to practice architecture in NC, Tennessee, Georgia, Virginia. He has served on the Buncombe County Board of Adjustment, the Weaverville Planning and Zoning Board, as an advisor to the NC Maritime Museum. He currently serves as a Board member of the North Buncombe Youth League and as a volunteer coach for the Buncombe County Special Olympics. Any free time is devoted to his family and longtime interest in travel, sports, guitar, and woodworking.
